Jim Left Me–But Only For a Week

Apache Junction, AZ  High 87  Low 53

Jim left this morning and is in Grants, NM tonight. He is going hunting with his oldest son, Steve.

It has been probably 20 years since they have been hunting together and I’m not sure which one is more excited. Jim got a mule deer tag and Steve has a turkey and some other tags. I’m really hoping they fill their tags because that will put meat on Steve and Jen’s table for the winter. (No – not on ours because I do not care for venison.)

This is going to be hard for me because you might remember that Jim’s best friend, Bill, was out hunting with his son last year and died in his son’s arms of a heart attack. I have lectured both Jim and Steve over and over again about the fact that Jim has gotten a lot older and has had several health issues. Hard for Jim to accept and I think Steve still thinks of his Dad as being someone who can conquer mountains.

Everyone here is taking very good care of me. Toni and Doug fed me a fantastic roast chicken dinner with potatoes, carrots, stuffing, green beans, gravy and apple cobbler. It was fantastic.

I know that if I need anything, all I have to do is ask and my neighbors will take care of it for me. They’ll even taken me to the store if I should happen to run out of food (which truly is not going to happen).

The girls don’t understand why Dad hasn’t come home. Every pickup that goes by has them running to the door.

  1. I'm sure that Jim will enjoy being with your son... Just hope he doesn't try to do too much!!! BUT--since he knows what happened to his friend, I'm sure he will be more careful...

Sounds like you are doing well --and that others are doing nice things for you while Jim is gone.

    Hugs,
    Betsy

  3. I always enjoyed a few days of being alone and no husband to have to cook for! He'll be back before you know it, and I hope they have fun and a successful hunt.

  4. I'm hoping that the time will fly by for you, Sandie, and that Jim will be safe and sound.

  5. Oh Sandie, you are on to something there. Sons have problems to accept that their dads are getting older and finally quite frail - like my Dad. And being alone in the rig - well it is a strange feeling right? Bea is in Germany, she just called. The house is strangely empty. Just Molly and me. I know you will take care of yourself and let's hope that Jim will be back soon - happy and contented. We guys need that kind of adventure from time to time. :-)

  7. Hope they have a good hunt and return safely loaded for bear... no venison. Sounds like you're in good hands and not likely to starve ;-)

  8. I think that it does good for men to go away and do things they like to do (not for too long Though). They come back refreshed.

  12. I don't like hunting or venison either. However, I do enjoy some alone time for a few days. I'm sure you'll find things to do to keep yourself busy..

  13. What an amazing time dad and son will have. My dad just turned 86 and one of the my brothers took him out for a beer. Then a grandson joined them. Dad said it was a wonderful time. Lots of memories. I am sure that is what Jim and Steve will make.

You couldn't be in better hands than Doug and Toni's.

  14. Sandi, I'm happy that Jim is getting to spend time with his son, and is living life to its fullest, but I feel for you--the worry. He'll be home in no time, and you and the girls will rejoice. Seems like sudden death only occurs when we're NOT worried and it's the furthest thing from our minds.

Boy your description of the roast chicken meal made my mouth water! Even though we always had turkey for Thanksgiving, I've always thought that roast chicken tasted so much better.

You can't beat having good neighbors. I'm glad they're looking after you. Pats, as always, to your darling little pups. I love opening your page and seeing them looking back at me. :)

  15. ah, Sandie.... what a wonderful love ... I've been alone so long i wouldn't know how to act to have 'others' looking after me...

wow. and what a wonderful outing for Jim and his son... I don't like hunting and hope they don't kill anything... I really do... I won't apologize ... lol

don't know how anyone could look at little deer and kill it... just don't... maybe they'll just build a fire and sing campfire songs and take pictures of all the forest creatures... and miss your cooking and sweet smile ;)

  20. I was going to say exactly what Denise said - it must feel weird to have Jim gone. It's nice that you have friends all around you, though, and of course the "girls." You'll do fine. I hope Jim gets his deer. :)
